BREAKING : Rising Theft and Housebreaking Cases in Rumphi

Residents of Rumphi Urban have raised alarm over the surge in theft and housebreaking incidents, expressing deep concern about their safety and security in the district.

Speaking to Zodiak Broadcasting Station, one of the concerned residents, Rashid Mkandawire, said people are now living in constant fear due to the increased frequency of thefts, some of which are brazenly happening in broad daylight. “We no longer feel safe, even during the day. It’s like thieves are now operating without fear,” Mkandawire said.

The wave of criminal activity is not only affecting private households but also public institutions. The Rumphi District Council’s Director of Health and Social Services, Dr. Arnold Jumbe, revealed that thieves have been targeting the district hospital, stealing vital plumbing materials and other essential supplies, thereby compromising service delivery.

In response to the growing concerns, Police Spokesperson Sub Inspector Noel Kamchenga admitted that cases of theft and housebreaking have indeed gone up in the district. However, he emphasized the need for community involvement in crime prevention. “We are doing our part, but we encourage residents to strengthen neighborhood watch groups and report suspicious activities promptly,” he urged.

According to police statistics, the first quarter of the year alone has seen at least 156 cases of theft recorded in the district — a number that has alarmed both authorities and the general public.

Local leaders and security stakeholders are now calling for a multi-sectoral approach to address the issue, including improved street lighting, increased police patrols, and community sensitization on safety practices.

While the police continue their efforts to bring the situation under control, residents are hoping for quick and effective interventions to restore peace and security in Rumphi.
