The manager, Kettie Mzembe (31), was arrested by Mzuzu Police on Thursday evening, June 5, 2025. She was caught with five other people, accused of secretly taking Illovo sugar from the shop and selling it behind customers’ backs. This happened while she was telling the public that there was no sugar left in the store.
Police spokesperson, Sub Inspector Cecilia Mfune, said people reported to the police after seeing sugar being taken out through the back of the shop and loaded into private cars, motorbikes, and bicycles.
This happened just a few hours after Mzembe told people the shop had no more sugar, leaving many customers upset and without anything to buy.
Police quickly followed the tip, went to the shop, and arrested Mzembe and the five others. They also took back four bales of sugar during the arrest.
The other five arrested are (with age included):
- Martin Kafera (37)

- Medison Kokha (25)
They will soon appear in court for charges related to dishonest selling and hiding important goods.
