The secretaries of the six political parties competing in the September 16 elections have reiterated their commitment to ending political violence, but have failed to take responsibility for their parties’ involvement in the matter.
In a statement read to journalists at the Centre for Multiparty Democracy in Lilongwe, the secretaries said they were disappointed by the ongoing violence, despite their efforts to resolve it.
CMD chairman Elias Chakwera and his deputy Ben Chakhame said the parties would not accept the recent incidents of violence until the police, who are involved, have thoroughly investigated and the perpetrators have been brought to justice.
Among the incidents of violence they cited were the vandalism of the vehicles of the country’s president, Lazarus Chakwera, in Chikwawa, the vandalism of an Aford leader in Lilongwe, the stripping of an MCP woman in Blantyre and the burning of a DPP vehicle in Dowa.
First, the secretaries met with ambassadors from various countries to assure them of their commitment to ensuring that the elections will be peaceful and orderly, as they have been requesting.
