ENGLISH VERSION OF THE STORY
A 9-year-old girl, a Grade 2 student at Chamkango Primary School in the Mphomu Yayulu Mphomwa area of Kasungu, is in critical condition after her mother burned her face with a hot iron.
The district’s chief child protection officer, Sam Kamalanda, confirmed the incident and said the child has already been sent to the Nkhamenya Mission Hospital where she is receiving medical treatment.
Kamalanda said the mother is suspected of acting out of anger because the child suspected her of stealing K3,150 from the mother and it was her father who complained about the matter to the district’s child protection officer.
According to Kamalanda, police at Chatoloma police station have arrested the mother but the police spokesperson in the district has not yet commented on the matter.
Meanwhile, child protection officers in the district have warned parents against child abuse, saying that if found, they will be punished according to child protection laws.
